Dr. Amelia M. Arria, from the University of Maryland School of Public Health, received a BS in Human Development and Family Studies from Cornell University, a PhD in Epidemiology from the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health and completed post- doctoral training in psychiatric and drug abuse epidemiology at the Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health. Since 2003, she has been the Principal Investigator on a large prospective study of health-risk behaviors of a large sample of college students who have been studied for seven years. Her other research interests include understanding risk and resiliency associated with adolescent and young adult drinking, illicit and nonmedical drug use, and suicidal behavior; evaluation of prevention, intervention and treatment programs; investigating the prenatal effects of maternal drug exposure, and translating research findings for policy makers, parents and families. She is currently the Director of the Center on Young Adult Health and Development at the University of Maryland School of Public Health, a Senior Scientist at the Treatment Research Institute in Philadelphia where she is the Scientific Director of the Parents Translational Research Center and a consultant on prevention issues for the Betty Ford Institute.
